Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical modality that has been practiced in a clinical setting in Asia for thousands of years. Designed to improve the circulation of “qi” (vital energy) in the body, very fine sterile needles are gently inserted into specific anatomic points located along 12 major pathways (meridians). These meridians correspond to the internal organs, as well as specific regions along the surface of the body. Imbalance in the form of pain or disease occurs when there is stagnation or blockage of energy in any combination of these meridians. According to Chinese medicine theory, health is achieved by maintaining a "balanced state" in the body. The therapeutic use of acupuncture functions to remove blockages and restore energy flow in order to achieve physiological and emotional balance and thus health in the body as a whole.
Acupuncture can be used to heal illness, rejuvenate vital energy, reduce pain, and maintain health. Patients commonly find acupuncture treatments to be very relaxing and enjoyable. Needles are generally retained for 20 to 35 minutes, during which time the patient is encouraged to practice meditation, visualizations, and/or breathing techniques. Acupuncture is generally painless and without side effects.
